Outreach work

Outreach work is one of U-Turn’s core services. It enables the workers to make and maintain direct contact with one of the most exploited groups of women in our society. They are notoriously hard to reach, have very low self- worth, and do not pro-actively access any services. Whilst on the streets they are exposed to the risk of violence and violence from punters, pimps and vigilantes on daily basis.

U-Turn undertakes three outreach sessions every week from 9pm to 3am, when the women are most likely to be found on the streets.

(The majority of other service providers operate on the 9am – 5pm basis, occasionally till 8 pm)

U-Turn workers drive around the streets, making contact with women, providing hot drinks, food, condoms and emergency clothing. Over time, trusting relationships are built up which allows the women to talk about their personal concerns. The aim of this work is to let them know that help is available and to encourage them to use the facility of the women’s centre during the day where they can get further advice, help, support and referrals to other agencies .
